Chocolat Frey selected AS-Interface as an I/O connection protocol for ease of installation and simplicity. The environment includes extensive cable runs. The final product is packaged using advanced robotics to fill plastic trays with chocolates in up to 40 different formats every day. Chocolate is emblematic of Switzerland and Chocolate Frey is a Swiss household name.
At their site in Buchs Switzerland pneumatics are used in the manufacture of the chocolate itself, to operate large bore water process valves and actuators. Kuhnke Airboxes were chosen over conventional valve islands to achieve the full decentralisation advantages of AS-Interface. Each Airbox K provides 2 pairs of pneumatic outputs, and 4 inputs. This image shows Airboxes installed in pairs to provide control and feed back of distribution lines. The Kuhnke Airboxes are installed immediately next to the actuators they are controlling for speed of response, and transparency of function.
Easy to fit, in minimal space with IP67 protection these I/O modules can be replaced in seconds when required and include basic on board diagnostics. Model shown is Kuhnke Airbox K-F-GE-MO with body mounted exhausts, power and control yellow cable, and monostable functionality.
